[内容简介]
格是语言系统中的基本范畴，既使在并不相关的语言中，也以各种表面上有着明显差别的方式出现。菲尔墨的The Case for Case就曾试图对形形色色的格形式下的普遍原则进行探讨。本书抓住了那些为适应不同的语言而产生的变异来探索它们的意义，所提供的背景有助于最好地理解特定语言中的格标记。
本书1994年初版，2001年修订。在修订版中，对重要概念的论述作了扩充和改进，吸收了当前研究中的最新进展，并在Chomsky的理论框架下探讨了抽象格的概念。
